What is a roof rat?

Roof rats, also known as black rats or ship rats, are a common species of rodent that can be found in various habitats worldwide. They are usually brown or black in color with a long, slender body, large ears, and a pointed snout. Roof rats are skilled climbers and are often found in trees, attics, and roofs of buildings, hence their name.

These rats are omnivorous and will eat a wide variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and insects. They are known carriers of diseases such as leptospirosis, typhus, and plague, making them a potential health hazard to humans and pets.

Roof rats are prolific breeders, with females capable of producing up to 6 litters per year, each with around 6-8 pups. They have a relatively short lifespan of about 1-2 years in the wild.

To prevent roof rat infestations, it is important to seal off any potential entry points to buildings, keep food sources stored in secure containers, and maintain a clean and sanitary environment. If an infestation occurs, it is best to contact a pest control professional to safely and effectively remove the rats.
